U.S. media before the Iraq invasion. Quantitative analysis of newspaper articles with respect to balance of sources

The role of the media before and during the Iraq war in 2003 in the United States still resonates topic. Journalists are often criticized for failing to fulfill their roles and violations of journalistic standards. This thesis deals with the balance of articles in two national newspapers, The New York Times and The Washington Post, in the period before the invasion of Iraq, specifically from the August 2002 until the invasion on March 19, 2003. The thesis is a quantitative content analysis of the articles from the front pages of these newspapers. The main hypothesis of the research is that, according to criticism that the media received, there should be more sources supportive of the administration of George W. Bush and almost no opposition. The thesis examines, whether journalists followed the norm of balance of sources, or whether is the criticism justified. The result is, that despite the lack of opposition on the domestic political scene, journalist found the opposition sources abroad. Reporting of these two newspapers were, in terms of used sources, balanced.

Diploma thesis "Social Network Facebook in News: Comparison of Space Dedicated to Social Network Facebook and its Content in Czech Media in the Years 2009 and 2011", is dedicated to the way of use and citation of social network Facebook in the selected news media. The paper summarizes the establishment and strengthening of online media, particularly the phenomenon of social networks on the example of social network Facebook, and their influence on the transformation of the media sector, news values and new resources. In analyzing the texts containing the word Facebook in selected periods of 2009 and 2011 the thesis compares the frequency of posts mentioning the term Facebook in the dailies Blesk, Hospodářské noviny and MF Dnes and on the news sites Aktuálně.cz and iDNES.cz. According to the results of the analysis thesis describes the work and changes of work with social network Facebook in the Czech media, including its use as a news source, it evaluates the change of Facebook's status in society Facebook and it mentions the relationship between the posts containing reference to the Facebook and news values. Survey conducted by agency My.cz focused on Czech journalists' approach to social networks including practical use of social networks as news sources is part of the diploma thesis.

The diploma thesis examines the attitudes of Czech university students towards information about politics. The subject of interest also lays in news sources which students use to get information from and in focus on the differences in students' attitudes related to their fields of study. The thesis is divided into two parts. The theoretical one introduces Czech media landscape and its characteristics, describes Czech university students and shows some international comparison. Related literature review follows. The base of this thesis is its practical part. It introduces the conducted research into detail. It describes its goals, methods and analysis used and, in the end, it shows the findings.
The development and change of information leaks in news articles published on tech - oriented media PhoneArena.com and MobilMania.cz

The topic of this thesis is the content of news articles regarding information leaks published on websites PhoneArena.com and MobilMania.cz, which focus on mobile phone news and related topics. Information leaks nowadays often appear in the electronics area on related websites, therefore it is proper to focus on this phenomenon from the viewpoint of media analysis. The work explores (through quantitative content analysis) not only the frequency of such reports between years from 2006 to 2016, but also other features, such as sources of such reports, the location of the notice regarding the information leak, or the potential doubt of the author over the truth of the content of such information. Further attention is paid to the comparison of differences between the Czech and international pages. On the theoretical level, this thesis focuses on the topics of online journalism, sources of online journalism, information embargo, ethical aspects of information leaks, with attention to originators of such reports called "leakers". This thesis seeks to clarify the transformation of the two mentioned sites over the said years in regard to the news articles focused on information leaks.

Media agenda building in czech news coverage on the example of health news

The main objective of this thesis is to describe agenda building process in Czech news media on the example of health news. The thesis is based on the concept of agenda-setting which operates with the term "media agenda". The fundamental question of media agenda building is how and why some topics get to the news while others not. Two separate pieces of research have been conducted for the purpose of this thesis. Firstly quantitative content analysis explores how selected Czech news media report on health news during 2013. The analysis is focused on daily press Mladá fronta Dnes, Lidové noviny, Hospodářské noviny, Právo, Česká televize TV news, and Český rozhlas radio news. Secondly, interviews with journalists who are or were devoted to the health news describe media routines forming media content. The result based on the two research methods is a description of health newsgathering. Particularly, the issues in question are how health journalists receive ideas for their stories, what motivates them, who forms health news, what role plays intermedia agenda, public relations materials or human stories.
Presentation of domestic violence in media during the period after the death of Simona Monyová

Thesis is devoted to the media representation of domestic violence. Text is thematically divided into theoretical and practical parts. In the theoretical, the first chapter is devoted to the introduction to domestic violence issue, both in terms of socio-psychological and legal, and there is also mentioned the issue of media violence representation of violence and in particular the representation of violence against women. In the practical part of the thesis, the results of research are presented. The research method is quantitative content analysis. The analysis is focused on the period before and after the murder of writer Simona Monyová (the whole year 2011). Thesis analyzes whether and how the Simona Monyová case has affected the representation of domestic violence in selected media - Mlada fronta Dnes, Lidove noviny, Hospodarske noviny, Pravo, regional Dailies, television Nova, Czech TV and TV Prima. Bachelor thesis called Display of a selected region, town or country in an agency press service presented on case of Great Britain deals with foreign coverage of the Czech News Agency concerning Great Britain which was published in a first term of the year 2011. Thesis is focused on written news only (not on photographies, audio or video), it is not focused on economic news and sport news. It brings information about news agencies in general and about the Czech News Agency, particularly about its foreign coverage. It is dedicated to area studies of Great Britain and consequently to bilateral relations among this country and Czechoslovakia, later the Czech Republic. Numbers of published news are filed into tables according to their categories, priorities and sources. Next step is to deal with an analysis of news published in the given period. It looks for differences among the news written by the foreign correspondent of the Czech News Agency working in London and those written by foreign redaction in Prague. Comparasion of foreigennews service of selected czech news websites

Bachelor thesis "Comparison of foreign news service of selected czech news websites" deals with foreign news of online media portals iDnes, Aktualne and Novinky. The aim of this thesis is to identify which of these three news websites provides the best quality of the news. The thesis focuses on the diversity as one of the possible indicators of quality of journalism. Specifically, it focuses on diversity of sources, diversity of topics, geographic diversity and the content uniqueness. The level of diversity for the first three categories is established with help of an index called Herfindahl. Consequently, its level is compared within the analyzed media. Particular interest is put on the used sources of the news. The thesis among others concentrate on how often the media quote Czech news agency, foreign news agencies and other media. At the end the comparison of analyzed online media portals is made and it is determined which of them provides the most diverse news.
